Abstract
A 56 year-old male presented to the hospital for low back pain of five-months duration. On lumbo-sacral magnetic resonance imaging, a dense contrast enhancement compatible with spondylodiscitis involving L5-S1 intervertebral disk, together with a paraspinal abscess was detected. Gemella haemolysans grew in blood cultures. The isolate was susceptible to amoxicillin-clavulanate and ciprofloxacin according to antibiotic susceptibility testing. At the end of the six-month treatment, the patient’s low back pain recovered completely. It should not be forgotten that G. haemolysans may play a role in the etiology of spondylodiscitis despite its rarity.
