Abstract
A 12-year-old female who was not vaccinated in early childhood was admitted to the hospital with severe muscle spasms and trismus. Her history revealed that she had suffered from an injury at her right foot by a nail twenty days ago. She had not received any tetanus vaccine or anti-tetanus immune globulin. She was diagnosed as tetanus and admitted to the intensive care unit. She didn’t have respiratory distress so she was monitored without mechanical ventilation. She was given a dose of tetanus vaccine and 500 IU human anti-tetanus immune globulin. Midazolam was given for generalized muscle spasms and intravenous metronidazole was applied. On the 28th day of hospitalization, the patient’s spasms completely disappeared and she was discharged with complete recovery. In conclusion, tetanus is a rare disease but it should be always kept in mind after injuries. Childhood and adult vaccinations are important for prevention.
