Abstract
Objective: It was aimed to investigate the presence of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) production and blaIMP-1, blaIMP-2, blaVIM-1 and blaVIM-2 genes in Acinetobacter strains isolated from clinical samples.
Methods: 150 Acinetobacter strains isolated from clinical samples which were sent to microbiology laboratory from March 2009 to June 2012 were included in the study. The antimicrobial susceptibilities of the strains were determined using automated system, and production of metallo-β-lactamase was investigated via Etest®. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was used for determining the blaIMP-1, blaIMP-2, blaVIM-1 and blaVIM-2 genes.
Results: 94% of strains were Acinetobacter baumannii and, 6% of strains were A. lwoffii. The strains were mostly susceptible to gentamicin (41.3%), amikacin (36.7%), and imipenem (25.3%), while they were resistant to ceftriaxone (92%), levofloxacin (84.7%), ceftazidime (84%), and piperacillin-tazobactam (84%). Sixty seven (44.7%) of the strains were MBL-positive via Etest®, and these strains were detected more resistant to imipenem, meropenem, ceftazidime, and ceftriaxone. No blaIMP-1, blaIMP-2, blaVIM-1 and blaVIM-2 genes were detected.,
Conclusions: While MBL production was detected in 44.7% of Acinetobacter strains, blaIMP-1, blaIMP-2, blaVIM-1 and blaVIM-2 genes were not determined.
