Abstract
Objective: We aimed to analyze the demographic information and geographic distribution of people who had exposures with rabies risk in Kayseri province of Turkey between 2009 and 2014.
Methods: The descriptive types of research data were obtained from the input into the Basic Health Statistics Module using Form 014. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows. Version 22.0 (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) software.
Results: Of the 4921 recorded individuals to be analyzed, 76.6% were male and 27.7% were between 10 and 19 years old. More than half of the instances of exposure were seen during spring and summer months. Approximately 60% of the cases were seen at health facilities in the central district.
Conclusions: As a result, rabies is a serious public health issue in the province of Kayseri. Due to the risk of rabies exposure, raising awareness among individuals under risk, especially age ≤19 year, as well as the rest of the community, and additionally vaccinating dogs, cats, and other pets with a high risk of exposure can contribute to solving the problem. In order to successfully fight against rabies and treat cases with risk of rabies exposure, data related to such cases must be recorded in a more systematic and detailed manner.
