Objective: Hyponatremia is described as serum sodium level below 135 mmol/L. The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of hyponatremia in patients receiving moxifloxacin treatment and to investigate whether moxifloxacin causes a change in serum sodium levels even if it does not decrease it to the level of hyponatremia.

Methods: The study group consisted of 36 patients who received moxifloxacin treatment by screening their files and Hospital Information System data, retrospectively. In those receiving moxifloxacin treatment for 5-7 days, a sodium value of 3 days before treatment, of the first 2 days, of 3rd-4th days, of 5th-7th days and for 3 days after treatment were recorded. In patients who received a longer treatment (8-14 days), an additional sodium value of 8th-14th days was recorded. Each patient was examined for hyponatremia within the day groups, and patients were divided into groups according to treatment duration (5-7 days and 8-14 days), gender, and treatment modality (oral and intravenous). For difference between the groups, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows. Version 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) statistical program and independent t-test has been used.

Results: Of 36 patients (mean age 60.78±15.93 years), 22 were male (mean age 58.64±15.51) and 14 were female (mean age 64.14±16.58). Of these patients, 20 were treated for 5-7 days and 16 patients for 8-14 days. 13 patients received oral and 23 patients received intravenous moxifloxacin. Four patients were already hyponatremic prior to the start of moxifloxacin therapy. Of the remaining 32 patients, 17 (53.1%) developed hyponatremia during the treatment, 3 in the first 2 days, 9 in 3rd-4th days; 3 in 5th-7th days and 2 in 8th-14th days of treatment (53.1%). Statistically significant differences were found between the day groups. Differences in terms of sodium levels according to the duration and modality of treatment were not statistically significant. Although there was a higher mean of sodium values in women, it was not significant statistically (p=0.125).

Conclusions: We found a statistically significant relationship between moxifloxacin and hyponatremia varying by duration of treatment. However, further clinical studies with more cases are needed to confirm these data.
