Abstract
Objective: Our objective in this study is to investigate the seasonal frequency and age distribution of rotavirus and adenovirus infection cases with acute gastroenteritis.
Methods: 1069 patients applying to the hospital between October 2009 and February 2011 with acute gastroenteritis were included in the study. Rotavirus and adenovirus were investigated in the stool samples of cases by using rotavirus and adenovirus antigen device (Rota-Adeno Virus Combo Rapid Test®, DIMA GmbH, Germany) based on immunochromatography. The input data were retrospectively evaluated by reassessing the patient files.
Results: Rotavirus antigen was found in 244 (22.8%) and adenovirus antigen was found in 31 (%2.9) of 1069 stool specimens. In addition, 60% of rotavirus and 52.2% of adenovirus infections were mostly observed during winter.
Conclusions: Analysis of rotavirus and adenovirus antigens in stool specimens is important for epidemiological purposes. It was concluded that these two agents should be routinely investigated in cases with gastroenteritis in our region.
